Chapter Nine

Steve had suggested I take the day off, but the last thing I wanted to do was have an idle mind and stew in my emotions. We both walked into the conference room that morning with a cup of coffee, and I gave the guys my usual good morning, which of course gave away my state of mind.

Why had I had to find four potential mates in FBI agents, possibly the only perceptive men on the face of the Earth? They all gave me their condolences after I reluctantly explained what was going on, and I felt a little relief as we finally moved on to the real work.

Steve said, “Jason?”

Jason asked, “I’m guessing neither of you watched the news this morning?”

We shook our heads, and then exchanged a glance.

Jason sighed, “Three goddess and two gods from all around Texas, including Damien Brand, were killed by snipers last night. I suspect you were supposed to be the sixth, Anise. Ballistics has already come back on the rifle, and our shooter from last night was the supernatural sniper, but it’s apparent he’s part of a bigger conspiracy, and we need to have a conversation with him.”

I just stared at him in disbelief, five gods had been murdered last night, by snipers.

“Were any more of them caught?”

Jason nodded, “Two of them were killed, they were human as well. The one in Houston was taken down by good timing as a patrol car was right down the street. The other one in San Antonio was taken down by the pack the god was a part of. That one was torn apart, and no charges have been brought as of yet.”

The words San Antonio made me flinch, and I wondered if I should really be at work that morning, but the idea of staying at home made my stomach turn even as my heart pounded in my chest.

“So, three down, and there are three left, one here…”

Jason said, “Austin, where our perp is from, and Corpus Christie.”

Steve cleared his throat, and I blushed, realizing I’d just stolen his meeting by asking the last few questions. Well, he didn’t look upset, just… worried about me.

Steve said, “Alright, we’ll see what we can get out of him, Chad?”

Chad said, “Between last night’s events, and the fact Carolyn Anderson seems to have a record of fifteen domestic disturbance calls, and an allegedly violent drunk for a husband, the cult case can be put to bed. It wasn’t picked up in the background check because she always refused to press charges, but I think we can agree the late Damien told the truth, and that Cloe had plenty of reason to be there. No proof, but all the lines are there.”

It all seemed so surreal, it was a horrifying validation of my earlier thoughts. Immortal or not, my life wasn’t guaranteed, and I felt a little sick at the idea of Damien being dead. I’d gotten good vibes from him, he’d been one of the good ones.
